ABSTRACT
This
work seeks to examine the impact of nanny on child development. . A child minder works out
of their home, operating as a small business. In America, child minders are
often advertised as a Daycare. A nanny is a person who provides child care. Typically,
this care is given within the children's family setting. Throughout history,
nannies were usually servants in large households and reported directly to the
lady of the house. Based on the findings of the study, it met that nannies have
great impact of child development. In the same vein, it was also advisable that
parents should take full charge of their children care rather than having a
nanny. But though, a great nanny can help you raise happy and healthy kids, but
the benefits go beyond that. With a little parenting support, you might
experience better work-life balance: you can focus on one area without feeling
stressed and guilty about the other. Those positive effects ripple outward,
too.
INTRODUCTION
Nannies differ slightly from other child
care providers. A child
minder works out of their home, operating as a small
business. In America, child minders are often advertised as a Daycare.
Depending on the country the child minder or daycare is in, government
registration may or may not be required. Within the UK, a child minder must be ousted
registered, hold a current pediatric first aid qualification, public liability
insurance and follow the EYFS. A mother’s helper is someone who may live in or
out of the household, and assists the woman of the house with general chores as
well as caring for the children. The term au
pair usually
refers to a young woman (or occasionally man), who comes from abroad to live
with the host family and learn the
local culture and language, while helping care for the children. A governess concentrates
on educating children inside their own home, and a Kindergarten or schoolteacher does
the same, but in a school environment.
In the 19th and early 20th
centuries, a nanny was usually known as a “nurse”, and was typically female. “Nurses”
were found in higher income homes, and “nurses” were either hired or were
slaves. Originally, the hired woman would have been expected to breastfeed the
infant, a role known as a “wet nurse”.
In some households, the nurse was a senior member of the household staff and
ran her own domain, a suite of rooms called the nursery.
Some were supported by at least one assistant, known as a nursemaid (or
nursery maid). Because of their deep involvement in raising the children of the
family, nannies were often remembered with great affection and treated more
kindly than the junior servants. Nannies that were slaves still suffered from
racism and cruelty. Nannies may have remained in the employment of the same
aristocratic or gentry family for years, looking after successive generations
of children.
Nannies today are often used in place of
Daycare, because they can be more cost effective. Even though there are no
legal requirements to be considered a nanny, families may require a background
check or a CPR certification. Families may also look for other special skills
in a nanny, such as being bilingual or having early childhood development
coursework done. Nannies help play a key role in a child’s development by
providing care. Therefore, the study trends to know the impact of nannies to
the children development.
STATEMENT
OF THE PROBLEM
Over the past decades, there has been a
sharp increase in the share of preschool aged children participating
non-parental child care arrangements. Currently, two-thirds of young children
regularly attend some form of child care, with the average child spending 32
hours per week in these settings (Laughlin, 2010). Moreover, the transition
into non-parental care occurs rapidly after childbirth. Most parents who are so
busy could not possibly give good parental care to children. On that note, it
resolves the need of having a nanny. For some children, this interaction is
needed to prepare them for going to school. Additionally, a child that is cared
for by a nanny may not have as structured of an environment as a child who is
in a crèche. This childcare solution may not be suitable for some families.
A nanny affords the consistency of care that
a child needs; because she resides in the home, the child knows she will be
available should the need arise. In this way, she is better able to serve as a
parental stand-in when the mother and father are away or otherwise engaged
which can help the child feel safe and form secure attachments to all his
caregivers. When the nanny lives in the home, the parents also never need worry
that she will be late to work or miss a day unexpectedly. Likewise, she will
naturally be more aware of the child’s specific needs because she will be privy
to the goings-on of the home even after her official workday is over.
OBJECTIVES
OF THE STUDY
The main purpose of this study is to
investigate the impact of nanny on child development. Other objectives of the
study are to;
1. To
examine the role of nanny on the development of children.
2. To
examine the effect of nanny on the development of children.
3. To
examine the different types of nanny.
RESEARCH
QUESTION OF THE STUDY
1. What
is the role of nanny in child development?
2. Is
there any effect of nanny on child development?
3. Are
there different types of nanny?
SIGNIFICANCE
OF THE STUDY
The study would be beneficial to families as
it would enhance them to know the pros and cons of having a nanny. The study
would also be beneficial to the general public, as it will help parents whose
jobs keep the community running smoothly, too police officers, service workers,
farmers, and electricians. When they can’t do their work, other people feel the
effects. However, no matter the industry they work in, parents in good
physical, mental, and emotional health are better able to do their jobs, thanks
to the support of a nanny.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The
scope of this study is domiciled under the topic “impact of nannies to the
child development”
LIMITATIONS
OF THE STUDY
The researcher met with a lot of constraints
which includes that of; time, attitude of respondents and financial barriers
which made it difficult to collect data needed for this study and therefore
limits the study to the impact of nannies to child development.
Due to the financial constraints faced by the
researcher, data analysis for survey was narrowed down to impact of nannies to
child development. Also the study is constraint with limitation arising from
inadequate material on the subject matter as well as inadequate time due to the
inability of the writer to combined lectures with this extended essay, adequate
finance is also a great limitation to this extended project work.

REVIEW
OF RELATED LITERATURE
CONCEPT
OF NANNY
A nanny is a person who
provides child care. Typically, this care
is given within the children's family setting. Throughout history, nannies were
usually servants in large households and reported directly to the lady of the
house. Today, modern nannies, like other domestic
workers, may live in or out of the house, depending on
their circumstances and those of their employers. There are many employment agencies that
specialize in childcare. Nannies in many areas are a sought after member of the
workforce. Many nannies become a part of their family's household. Although
previously looked at as a lesser-than job, today's demand has made it a popular
and valued addition to the lives of the family's household.
TYPES
OF NANNY
Live-In
Nanny: A "live-in" nanny is much less common than
it once was. Being a live-in nanny may be ideal for a woman or man looking to
move interstate or abroad for either a short period of time or to set them up
financially. Typically, a live-in nanny is responsible for the entire care of
the children of their employers. This includes anything from washing the
children's clothes, tidying the children's rooms, supervising homework,
preparing children's meals, taking children to and from school, and taking
children to after-school sport and/or activities.
Live
Out Nanny: A live out Nanny is a Nanny who commutes to the
place of work. They may live close to the residence or they may live
further afield. Live out Nannies tend to be preferred by families with older
children or families wanting part time Nannies. They usually tend to have
their own families (may be married and have their own children in some cases)
and like the independence of being separate from the family they are working
for.
Nanny
Share: This type of
nanny can be a great way for your child to gain social skills by mixing with
other children. It is also a cheaper option as the childcare cost is shared
between the families. However, a detailed contract of employment would be
essential to ensure all parties' requirements are met, things like how to
organise holidays, where the nanny is to be based and how she is to be paid
should be of most importance.
Temporary/Emergency Nanny: A temporary nanny will have the same
responsibilities as that of a Daily or Live in nanny but will only be with you
for an agreed period of time. This type of nanny is ideal for giving relief
care for your regular nanny i.e. when ill although can be utilised for many
other situations.
Before & After
School Nanny: A before and after school nanny
is just that, a nanny that comes in and looks after the children before and/or
after school. Her duties will be similar to those of a daily nanny but more
focused on after school activities and clubs, supervising homework and
preparing tea.
Part Time Nanny: A part
time nanny works the hours that you require be it afternoons, mornings, or a
couple of days a week. Her role will be similar to that of a daily nanny but it
is worth remembering that she may not be able to fit as much in!! Again, the
wage for this is £8-10 net per hour approx.
Maternity Nurse: A
maternity nurse will generally be employed for the first 4-6 weeks from the
date when a new mother is due back from hospital after having had her baby. She
will live-in with the family and should be given her own accommodation.
Night
Nanny: A more recent addition to the role of a nanny is that
of a night nanny. The night nanny usually works with a family anywhere from one
night to seven nights, per week. A night nanny generally works with children
from newborn to five years of age. A night nanny can provide a teaching role,
helping parents to establish good sleeping patterns or troubleshooting the
sleeping patterns of a child. Pay rates vary from country to country but are
usually well paid in comparison to the general nanny, as the night nanny is
seen as a specialist or expert in their field.
ADVANTAGES
OF HAVING A NANNY
There are a several benefits to having a
Nanny and the main advantages are listed below.
Reduce
the Rush: When hiring a Nanny, you don’t have to worry about
getting your little one ready and out of the door in the morning. Your Nanny
will happily take care of getting your child ready and giving them breakfast
etc. whilst you can focus on having a stress-free start to your day.
Childcare
in the Comfort of your own Home: The fact that care is
delivered in the home means that your child will feel completely comfortable in
familiar surroundings and their sleep/eating routines can remain consistent.
Dedicated
Care: Your Nanny is completely focused on delivering a
high standard of care for your children only. Completely dedicated to their
development and needs, the one-on-one care of a Nanny can help to create a
positive relationship and put parents’ minds at ease. For ongoing positions,
our Nannies also complete a Daily Nanny Diary to give parents a thorough
overview of their child’s day and progression.
Flexibility:
Hiring
a Nanny gives you a great deal of flexibility that isn’t always possible in
childcare centres or playgroups. If you are running late home from work, you
won’t incur those dreaded late fees. If you need extra days at the last minute,
we are also on hand to help!
Back
up Care Options: If a Nanny is sick or unable to work,
we offer a replacement Nanny at no extra cost to ensure that the schedule of
our parents and their children is not affected. We have several Nannies
registered who we have met in person and have already met our rigorous checks
and requirements.
Checks
and Qualifications: All of our Nannies must have at least 2
years’ professional paid experience working in childcare. In addition, they
must also hold a valid Working with Children Check, First Aid Certificate and
Police Clearance Check.
Social
Interaction: People may argue that having a Nanny
can limit a child’s social interaction. However, Nanny Share (nanny-share) is a
great way to create a bond with another family and child. Your Nanny can also
take your children to group classes or organise play dates to guarantee that
your child has plenty of social interaction.
DISADVANTAGES OF HAVING A NANNY
With nannies come
parenting style conflicts and issues with regulation. Here's why you may not
want to have a nanny.
Parenting
Style Conflicts: If you and your
nanny disagree on topics such as discipline, sleeping, or other parenting
issues, it may be a conflict and make for a difficult relationship. It is best
to find a nanny who is on the same page as you in terms of parenting
style. Consistency between caregivers is important for child development.
Cost:
Nannies usually cost significantly
more than daycare centers. Nanny costs vary depending on location, the number
of kids, and other factors. If you want a nanny, but cannot afford an
individual nanny, think about a nanny share where two children share one nanny.
Lateness:
If a nanny consistently shows
up late, then it makes you late for work. Since the nanny is coming to your
home you cannot control her tardiness.
No
Coverage for Sick Time: If
your nanny gets sick, takes a personal day or has to leave town,
you will have to stay home or find backup care.
No
Regulations: Nannies are not
required to have extra education on child development or specific
certifications. Many nannies are CPR certified, but not all. Screening nanny
candidates and running background checks are up to parents.
ROLES
OF NANNIES TO CHILD DEVELOPMENT
Nannies are trained and have specialized
childcare Qualification. They know and understand the development and needs of
young children. They know how to deal with them when they cry, or when they
refuse to have their food or milk on time. They are patient, and offer love and
security to children whilst their parents are away.
Since nannies are responsible for
looking after children, they know the healthy foods that need to be fed to
children. They are responsible for feeding them time to time. If the children
are older and go to school, nannies can help them with their homework. They are
also responsible for all nursery duties e.g. laundry, Cooking.
Since toddler’s love playing around and
involving in different activities, nannies arrange play dates for them. They
take them to the library, playgroups, and parks to enjoy and have fun. When
home, they make sure that the child has their favorite but safe toys to play
around with. They know the importance of nurturing a child well and teaching
them good habits as they grow. They interact with them and are responsible to teach
them good manners. However, nannies cannot fulfill all their responsibilities
if they don’t have support from the family.
THE
EFFECT OF NANNIES ON CHILDREN DEVELOPMENT
As the classic African proverb goes, “it
takes a village to raise a child.” The saying is true now more than ever. Many
parents who juggle careers and families sometimes need a little extra help.
Those who are lucky enough to have hired help understand just how much their
nanny does for their family. However, do you know how much a nanny’s work
impacts life outside of the family?
A nanny can have a positive influence on
a child, but she can also have an impact on the parents’ lives, the community,
and the economy. Nannies lend support to individual families, but their impact
has a ripple effect that extends far beyond one family. In honor of National
Nanny Recognition Week, we’d like to share just a few of the ways nannies make
a difference in the world.
The
Wellbeing of Children: First and foremost, a good nanny
can have a positive effect on a child’s cognitive and social development.
Younger children tend to experience
less stress when they receive quality child
care at home. And when a child’s caregiver is warm, sensitive, and positively
engaged, young kids benefit. With increasing
rates of stress and anxiety in children, this can have
positive effects on kids both now and in the future!
Hiring a nanny can also benefit the
children’s wellbeing in certain cases. Children with special needs who require
more personalized attention may do better under a nanny’s care, rather than at
daycare or preschool. It may be less expensive (and less chaotic) to hire a
nanny to care for multiple children, rather than sending everyone to a child
care facility outside of the home. Plus, a nanny is more likely to notice
changes in your child’s behavior right away, whether it’s something positive
(she learned a new word!) or negative (she’s having trouble sleeping at
night).
Personalized care from a nanny can
improve the lives of individual children, which thereby improves the wellbeing
of their parents, families, and communities. The effects of one great nanny in
a neighborhood can spread further than the family she works for.
Parents’
Health and Career: Parents today feel pressured to succeed
at their jobs, raise smart and well-behaved children, stay healthy, and spend
quality time with their families. However, sometimes it feels like there aren’t
enough hours in the day to accomplish all of that. Raising children is a
separate full-time job on its own; if both parents have careers, how can they
devote the proper attention to both work and family?
Bringing a nanny into the family can
lesson some of that stress. Having a trusted and trained professional to take
on some of the burden of child care allows parents to excel in their careers,
provide for their families, and worry just a little bit less. Parents who leave
their children in the care of a loving, dedicated nanny can devote more time
and full attention to their work. When the work day ends, parents can spend the
commute home decompressing, rather than rushing to pick up the kids and avoid
paying late fees at a daycare.
Benefits
to Society at Large: It might seem like a grandiose claim,
but we think nannies are a vital part of a happy and healthy society. Kids who
receive more personalized care from nannies rather than group facilities like
daycare may get sick less often, reducing the spread of colds and illnesses
(especially during flu season!).
Parents who are able to hire nannies can
spend more time in the office focusing on their work, providing for their
families as well as society at large. Working parents have a huge impact on the
economy, the people in their community, and even the world. Doctors, teachers,
research scientists, firefighters: these professionals all do work that
contributes greatly to society. And when they can trust in a professional to
care for their children, their attention can be focused on the kind of
difference they want to make in the world.
THEORETICAL
FRAMEWORK
Erikson’s
Psychosocial Developmental Theory
Erik Erikson was an important figure in
the fields of psychoanalytics and psychological development. He was also the
famous coiner of the popular phrase “identity crisis”. Central to much of his
work was his theory on psychosocial development. As it became known, Erikson’s
Psychosocial Developmental Theory produced a framework for organizing human
growth, through all stages of life, into eight distinct stages. Key to the
outcomes of the child stages as well as those afterward are the principles of
social interaction and experience.
Freud’s
Psychosexual Developmental Theory
According to Encyclopedia
Britannica, Sigmund Freud “may justly be called the most
influential intellectual legislator of his age.” While creating the modern
field of psychoanalytics, Freud also went on to make many other significant
contributions to the sciences including the assertion of multiple, important
theories. Freud’s Psychosexual Developmental Theory was one of these important
products in which Freud explained that child experiences, experienced at
different ages in childhood, directly go on to dictate personality and behavior
patterns in the later adult. This general theory has since birthed virtually
countless studies, disciplines, and other academic and business establishments.
RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH
DESIGN
The research design used descriptive and
survey method of data collection in an attempt to empirically ascertain the
impact of nannies on children development. The descriptive and survey approach
was used because it has its own advantages of identifying attributes of a large
population from a small group of individuals, the economy of the design and the
rapid approach in data collection (Babbie, 2000).
SAMPLE
AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUES
A sample size of three hundred (300)
respondents was drawn from the population of the study. Simple random sampling
techniques were used to select respondents based on the fact that they have
expertise in the area being researched.
SOURCES
AND METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION
In this study both the primary and
secondary data were used. Secondary data was used in establishing chronological
framework of this research work. The questionnaire was design in a way that
respondent could easily provide adequate answer in the study.
DATA
ANALYTICAL METHOD
The questionnaire was design in a way
that respondent could easily provide adequate answer in the study.
CONCLUSION
AND RECOMMENDATIONS
CONCLUSION
Based on the findings of the study, it
met that nannies have great impact of child development. In the same vein, it
was also advisable that parents should take full charge of their children care
rather than having a nanny. But though, a great nanny can help you raise happy
and healthy kids, but the benefits go beyond that. With a little parenting
support, you might experience better work-life balance: you can focus on one
area without feeling stressed and guilty about the other. Those positive
effects ripple outward, too. Happy and healthy kids make for happy and healthy
parents, both of which can have a positive effect on their community and
society at large. Nevertheless, home remains the emotional centre of children’s
lives and it is important that supportive parent–child relationships not be
harmed by child care experiences even when children spend considerable amounts
of time in care.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the findings of the study it
recommended that parents should;
1. Find
as much as many excuses making them feel better and shrug to their responsibilities
for their kids’ behaviour.
2. Make
it the priority to get their kids into the best schools.
3. Not
forget to teach their child good manners which are way more important than good
grades.
